Who exactly is the composer behind the iconic song?

Did you know that "Golden Slippers" was written by African American banjo and songwriter James Bland!

James Bland was born on October 22nd, 1854 in Flushing, New York. Bland and his family would later live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and would later leave the city to pursue a career as a music entertainer attending Howard University in Washington D.C. Bland would go onto write over 700 songs.

The New Year's Day anthem of "Oh! Dem Golden Slippers" was introduced to the Philadelphia parade in 1905. Bland died on May 5th, 1911 and was buried in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania.
